Srinagar, May 7: The Jammu and Kashmir police’s Counter-Intelligence wing Tuesday arrested Hilal Mir, a Kashmir-based journalist, for allegedly “spreading anti-national material”.
In a press release, the police said they had arrested a “radical social media user… along with digital equipment such as a mobile phone and laptop.
Allegations and Charges
The police release stated that he was running social media accounts to “disseminate extremist/distorted content to disturb peace and promote disaffection and secessionist ideology and present India in a bad shape.”
Mir works for a Dubai-based business news portal and has previously worked with local and national news organizations. A senior official added, “He has been detained under preventive measures and lodged in Central Jail, Srinagar.”
Intent and Accusations
Police charged Mir with being “actively involved in posting and sharing content with an intent to instill sentiments among young minds and to create secessionist sentiment by projecting Kashmiris as victims of systemic genocide.”
They claimed his posts manifest a “coded attempt to promote public resentment, which is an affront to security/sovereignty.”
Digital Evidence and Investigation
The CIK asserted that an initial examination of the digital equipment “uncovered access to the radical account as well as incriminating material and other extremist/distorted content/propaganda.”
Police also accused him was being in contact with some suspected foreign-based cell numbers engaged in suspicious activities, allegedly taking dictation from the enemy for causing disturbance to the peace and tranquility in the Valley, which is a matter of investigation.”–(The Indian Express)
